Student Attitudes to Writing

Narratives of affect and academic writing: Exploring student attitudes to writing in the Faculty of Arts

In Fall 2017, Dr. Jaclyn Rea and Dr. Kate Power will be expanding upon their 2016–2017 research project with Faculty of Arts and Vantage One students, to include students in UBC’s Bachelor of International Economics (BIE) program. This project surveys student attitudes towards and emotions about academic research and writing, with a view to adding an evidence-based, affective dimension to curriculum revision and professional development within Faculty of Arts first-year writing programs. The results of this research will help writing instructors better recognize and respond to barriers to student engagement and learning. In doing so, this project will also contribute to an emerging conversation in the scholarly literature around student attitudes and emotions. Please contact Dr. Power if you have any questions about this study.
